One Year on the Road

Chapel Hill!

Our first morning, we went to the Weaver Street Market.

We had coffee with Barb, an old family friend of Jennifer&#039;s.

The old train station is now a coffee shop.

Funny to see this after seeing Barb. Her ex-husband used to sing that song on his guitar.

We met up with Denise, an old friend from Santa Cruz.

Denise moved to Chapel Hill to live in this cohousing community.

It&#039;s an intentional community of individually owned houses.

They share a garden.

And chickens.

There&#039;s a pond.

Lots of communal property.

The houses are unique in style.

Prayer flags and solar panels.

A screened in crow&#039;s nest.

The publisher of Sun magazine lives in this one.

This is the communal area.

The downstairs has a large dining room.

And kitchen for shared meals.

Doors open to the patio.

Upstairs are guest quarters.

Anybody can sign up to use one of the guest rooms.

Denise&#039;s daughter, Chiara, painted this portrait of their dog, Sadie.

Sadie&#039;s a great dog.

Sweet as can be, and loves to fetch.

Denise and I took Bailey and Sadie for a long walk through a nearby park.

It&#039;s a huge park with trails for biking and hiking.

Bailey was so happy to run free with Sadie.

Gypsy was not feeling so free on Monday.

She had an appointment to be spayed.

She wasn&#039;t happy at all.

Looking for an escape.

The doctor and vet tech were wonderful.

While Gypsy was at the vet, we visited nearby Hillsboro with Denise.

It&#039;s a sweet little town with history that dates to the 1700s.

A friend of Denise&#039;s snagged us and brought us to see this installation in the park.

Patrick Dougherty has been building these &quot;stick houses&quot; all around the world.

Denise&#039;s friend was one of the volunteers helping him.

She pointed out how the sticks are woven together.

It&#039;s a lot of work.

It&#039;s a two-story structure.

Next, Denise took us to the cemetery.

William Hooper, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is buried there.

Also a famous Superior Court judge from the 1800s.

This young mother and her year-old baby died on the same day.

This was an odd little sunken grave, walled off with bricks.

The tiny headstone reads only &quot;TH.&quot;

We walked around neighborhoods and looked at old houses.

William Hooper lived in this house.

Twin Chimneys, 1768.

We met a little friend on our walk.

A yard full of birdhouses.

This one was for sale.

It&#039;s about 100 years old.

The sidewalk was poured around this tree root.

Most of the houses are rennovated beautifully.

This inn from the early 1800s has been left to disrepair.

This city is trying to use emminant domain to take it and restore it.

Local apples are sold outside the hardware store.

Yams and pumpkins, too.

We stopped by this great gallery to visit a friend of Denise&#039;s.

They were in the midst of installing new exhibits.

Poor Gypsy&#039;s surgery went just fine.

She loves her Bailey so much.
