One Year on the Road

Pentwater, Michigan

Antique store in Pentwater.

My brother and sister-in-law introduced me to Pentwater about a dozen years ago. They’d bought a vacation cabin there, and I went there with them and my mom. It was a very sweet, woodsy place, with a short walk to a sandy beach. It was fall then, and Pentwater was a quiet little harbor town. I have fond memories of the place. Now they’ve put the house on the market, and I had a hankering to see it one last time, even if it was just from the outside.

Charles Mears State Park is right in Pentwater, on the beach. It seemed the logical place to stay, and we got the last available spot. It is one crowded, buzzing park! Parking lot, more like, with everybody crammed butt to butt, side to side. Families mostly, but happy, pretty ones. And everyone we met was so friendly, we soon came not to mind the cramped quarters.

Beach north of Pentwater.

Right off we took a drive to my brother’s cabin and gave it a little sad goodbye. We went down to the nearby beach for a quick walk, and I remembered looking for Petosky stones with my young nephews, who are in college now. And then a quick walk through downtown, which is so different in the summer, filled with tourists and boaters.

Sunset watchers.

Back at the campground, we went to the beach just in time to watch the sunset, along with about 200 other people. It was such a fun scene actually… everybody I hanging out with the kids and their dogs, laughing and talking. Bailey ate up attention, and I soaked in the radiant colors of the cloudy sunset. This was a quick stopover for us, but a very satisfying one.

Am I Dreaming?

Last night I dreamed that I found out I was about to get laid off and before I could tell Kate, she announced that she couldn’t take working anymore and had just turned in her resignation. I woke up in a panic, and then I remembered… oh, yeah. We don’t have any jobs! In my sleep-boggled state, I had to revisit that fact a few times before I was convinced that everything really was okay.  I still have to pinch myself on a regular basis.
