One Year on the Road

Flooded Guadalupe River on the way.

Beth and Don got there first.

They got us a spot near them.

Actually, we had the whole loop to ourselves.

We soon found out why: mosquitos! We put up our screen shelter immediately.

Showing off a texas tea towel we brought them from Gruene.

It was hot but more or less bug free in the shelter.

Beth and Don braved the skeeters to cook dinner.

They made a chicken meal in the dutch oven.

While dinner cooked, we took a walk.

Most campers were by the gulf beach, where the mosquitos weren&#039;t so bad.

There was no beach, just a sea wall.

The splashes kind of scared Bailey.

Beth did the mosquito dance the whole way back, but she still got bit up.

The next morning, I got up early...

While it was only in the 80s, I put on long sleeves and pants...

...and braved the mosquitos for a bike ride.

After breakfast, we went for a drive.

This big oak tree is over 1,000 years old.

We spotted this crazy looking bird in a tree. Appears to be a black and white hawk eagle.

This tiny fawn couldn&#039;t jump the fence after its mom.

We spent some time herding it to a safe area.

We drove into Rockport for lunch.

Really good food at this place on the water.

Beth and I took seats at the bar.

We decided to move the screen room closer to Bessie.

So we could watch Lucy and Dezie&#039;s &quot;The Long, Long Trailer&quot; on the outside TV.

&quot;Can you believe it???&quot;

The next morning, Beth and Don hitched up early.

Off they went...

More flooded land on the drive home.

New marshland.

We took a short stop at Wharton.

It&#039;s got a beautiful County Courthouse.

But the rest of the town is fading fast.

Bailey was happy to get out for a bit.

The coffeeshop sign says, &quot;Customers please call... will meet you here in 10 minutes or so.&quot;

It&#039;s a pretty shut-down town on Sunday.

But Bailey found a little friend.
