A Father’s Day adventure, searching out an old family homestead that’s now part of the Mark Twain National Forest.

The Methodist Church was on the Dewitt's Folly property.

It was built in 1887.

Me and Dad in front of the church.

Soon after the church was the road to the house.

It was very wet from the recent rain.

We made it through the first few.

But we held off here.

There was a stile near the fence.

Dad looked down the open area.

A butterly.

An old spring house.

I chatted with horse riders who remembered the old silo.

Dogs on a nearby property.

Our little parking spot.

We set up outside for as long as we could stand the heat.

Our boondocking spot.

Cooking burgers.

Dogs in Bessie.

There were no cars on the road at all.

A heron by the river.

Dogs in the car.

Annie.

Hanging out after dinner, listening to hillbilly music on the radio.

In the morning, the puddle on the road was still just as deep.

We made our way around it.

Soon we came to the stream across the road.

But now it was a fast river.

Dad started to make his way across.

We stepped slowly across it together.

Very carefully...

We did it!

An easy part of the road.

The picnic table where the house was.

And there was the lake.

We made it!

The spring-fed spillway across the lake.

That island had seemed so far away when I was little.

Dad wonders if the house hadn't been further down the lakeside.

We tromped through woods.

And through another stream.

But we determined the picnic table spot was the old homestead.

There were beds of tiger lillies.

They had been planted by Aunt Rie.

We were amazed that we had actually made it.

Annie takes a rest.

Bailey finds a stick.

Wildflower.

We hiked out to the spring spillway.

It's all so overgrown.

One last walk around the property.

Dad takes it all in.

This was worth every aching muscle he might feel later.

Freshly showered, ready to dig into breakfast.

I showed Dad the movie clip I edited.

It shows our family at Dewitt's Folly.

Walking across the very river we forged earlier.

On the drive home, the girls got cozy.

Bailey and Annie.
