One Year on the Road

Two women, their golden retriever, and an orphaned kitten hit the road in an RV for one year of "pretirement"

Our last campout in Bessie was in Bandon, Oregon with our friends Kathy and Robin.

Heading off on a bike ride.

We rode to the Coquille River Lighthouse.

It was built in 1896.

Unfortunately, it no longer functions.

Coquille River meets the sea.

The beach was too windy to enjoy.

And the ride back against the wind was brutal.

Robin shows Kate the cake she bought.

We were celebrating Kathy's birthday.

Lunch in a hammock.

Family chat time.

Saturday afternoon we drove into Bandon.

Robin checks out a fence porthole.

This was a "private museum" that was closed.

It had this old Morris car parked next to it.

And a very cool mail slot.

Fresh seafood in the sunshine.

We nearly got blown down along the boardwalk.

Boats in the harbor.

A sheltered place to eat.

This outdoor sculpture is made entirely of ocean garbage.

We went into the "Washed Ashore" project gallery.

Volunteers create art from beach refuse.

They have exhibits all around the country.

The purpose is to educate the public about the problems of ocean garbage.

And avoid our oceans looking like this.

Back at the campground, we took the pets for a walk.

Gypsy has been off leash for a month.

When she feels insecure, she stands on Kate's feet.

She walked over a mile on the nature trail, trotting to keep up with Bailey and me.

Back at our site, Bailey rests up.

We loved this St. Bernard/Russian Wolfhound mix.

Robin made a delicious chili verde for dinner.

Kathy and Robin have a fine kitchen.

But they still prefer doing dishes outside.

Gypsy loves the nightly ritual of filtering water.

We went on one last bike ride by the river.

Kathy took a few last photos of us with Bessie.

We never did get to Nevada.

I can't believe our time in Bessie has come to an end.

But there will always be other adventures out there for us.
